From Uruguay 1930 to the 48-team era. Each answer comes with the story behind it.
A short history of the World Cup
The FIFA World Cup was first played in 1930 in Uruguay with just 13 teams. Since then it has become the most-watched sporting event on the planet, held every four years except in 1942 and 1946 because of the Second World War. The tournament grew to 16 teams, then 24 in 1982, 32 in 1998 and finally 48 in 2026, the first edition shared by three host countries.
Brazil, Germany, Italy and Argentina are the traditional giants, and legends like Pelé, Maradona, Zidane and Messi built their reputations on the World Cup stage. The women’s tournament began in 1991 and has grown into a global event of its own.
