Artificial Intelligence Quiz: How Much Do You Know About AI?
Everyone is talking about AI. Do you know where it came from?
A brief history of artificial intelligence
The dream of thinking machines is old, but modern AI began in the mid-20th century. In 1950 Alan Turing asked whether machines could think, and in 1956 the Dartmouth workshop gave the field its name. Progress came in waves: early optimism, then “AI winters” when funding dried up, and then new breakthroughs as computers became faster and data more abundant.
Milestones like Deep Blue (1997) and AlphaGo (2016) showed that machines could beat the best humans at games of strategy. The 2017 “Transformer” design made today’s large language models possible, and with ChatGPT in 2022 AI reached hundreds of millions of people.
Using AI wisely
- Double-check important facts: AI can “hallucinate”.
- Don’t share passwords or sensitive personal data with chatbots.
- Be skeptical of shocking videos or audio: they could be deepfakes.
